Brian Abingdon and Nan Welcome to Abingdon Ranch, home of Abingdon Border Collies. We are dedicated to:

  • the breeding of ABCA working ranch border collies
  • sales of working ranch or trial level stock dogs
  • sales of working prospect border collie puppies
  • training of stock dogs and lessons for their handlers.

Abingdon Border Collies has a tradition of breeding top ABCA working border collie bloodlines, proven by producing decades of quality working ranch dogs, some who are also successful at competitive USBCHA, ASCA and other trial venues.

Abingdon Border Collies’ objectives in breeding are to produce:

  • working border collies that are gentle on sheep but tough enough to work rank cattle
  • border collies with excellent temperament
  • athleticism combined with durable conformation in a working ranch stock dog
  • innate trainability that the results in a biddable, proficient working border collie

Basic obedience training of our border collie puppies begins at 8-10 weeks. Puppies are exposed to stock at about three months of age and will be introduced to working stock as they show interest and the mental maturity to handle stock handling pressure.

All stock dogs at Abingdon Border Collies are trained with international herding commands, using both voice and whistle. In addition a number of Abingdon Border Collies dogs have gone on to train for trials in agility, obedience, working stock, frisbees and fly ball, as well as therapy dogs, ranch dogs and family companions.

Brian Abingdon and Blue

At Abingdon Ranch, owner Brian Abingdon started training his own dogs to work stock as an integral part of his ranch team in 1985. While some may view the daily operations of a ranch this size a full time job, Brian views it as a lifestyle choice; one that enables him to enjoy one of his true passions in life - team roping.

Located about 4 miles off Hwy 99 between Eugene and Junction City in Cheshire, Oregon, Abingdon Ranch sits alongside the Long Tom River. The ranch has groves of majestic oak trees interspersed with picturesque pastures and is home to herds of elk and deer frequenting the area, along with our own stock and border collies. The area’s weather is generally mild in temperature but wet with frequent rainfall.

Training stock dogs in the mud much of the year led to the construction of a 72' X 204' indoor training arena in 2009. The indoor arena is a welcome addition to our training facilities, used year round for stock dog training, both of ranch and our clients’ dogs, Abingdon Stock Dog Clinics and private herding lessons. Current training facilities include a 200' X 300' outdoor arena, several smaller training pens, a duck course and larger pastures. Stock includes dog broke goats or sheep for younger or newly started dogs/ handlers, while ducks, cattle or sheep are available for working on advanced training or trialing techniques in preparation for ASCA or other herding trial venues. A custom dog room and outside kennels for visiting breeding or training dogs completes our facilities.
